English idioms on reading comprehension through a test submitted to the first year Master
English students at the English Department, Constantine. Algeria. This work attempts also
to examine whether the context plays a role on comprehension of idioms, the influence of
the categories of English idioms on understanding written discourse, and analyzing the
problems students encounter in attempting to comprehend the meaning of the
decontextualized idioms. The results obtained from the students’ answers show students’
unfamiliarity with decontextualized idioms. However, the students show familiarity with
the idioms given in context. The results present a very clear view of the influence of
context on students when they read a stretch of written discourse. Students’ answers also
provide the problems of guessing the appropriate meaning of the idioms and how the
degree of idiomaticity influences their comprehension. These problems clearly appeared
when students attempt to guess the meaning of the idioms from their constituent words as a
solution to the interpretation, and this is the major problem of the subjects under

of English fail to comprehend then acquire idiomatic expressions. Then, to see to what extent
these students are unaware of equivalent and translatable idiomatic expressions. Finally, it
aims to examine their use of simple expressions instead of idiomatic ones. A pre-test was
designed to evaluate students‟ awareness of idioms. Besides, the course‟s purpose is to boost
their knowledge about idioms. After that, the final test will reveal students abilities to provide
a correct translation based on the equivalent substitution from the mother language.The
results of the study show that students‟ awareness of idioms is medium and that they often
tend to avoid using figurative expressions since their meanings are sometimes not clear; they
prefer using effortless simple expressions which are easily produced. Moreover, since the best
translation strategy of rendering an idiom is by using another idiom in the target language,
when the students are aware of both of them, the translation process would be an easy task to
complete a literal translation without considering its restrictions may lead to an awkward and
unnatural translation. On the other hand, the strategy of translating an idiom with a normal,
non- idiomatic expression can be appropriate when there is no correspondence in the target
language. Further results also reveal that there are many interesting cultural similarities and
differences between idiomatic expressions in English and Arabic. The previous results
confirm our hypothesis which is if Master One students of English were exposed to equivalent
