Résumé : |
The current research deals with a problematic area in language learning which is spelling errors and confusion in the English orthography. The objective of the study is to determine the most common types of spelling errors made by EFL learners who are in the first grade at university. It aims to investigate the main causes behind the confusion in the English spelling and suggests some useful strategies in order to improve students’ English spelling. It is hypothesized that if first-year students of English are made aware of spelling rules, they will improve their spelling abilities, and if they make a difference between English spelling and pronunciation of words, they will reduce their spelling errors.
To collect data, we have used two means of the research; the first one is a questionnaire for thirteen teachers of written expression, whereas, the second one is a test designed for fifty students.
The obtained results indicate that the students’ confusion in the English orthography could be the result of many reasons such as their spelling rules deficiency, their exceptions, strategies, transfer from other languages and the overgeneralization of some spelling rules.
The research shows that some students face problems in learning English; they encounter more problems in spelling than in verbal skills and, therefore, written expression teachers should provide them with more practical courses in developing strategies to improve their spelling skills. |
