Résumé : |
Mohsin Hamid’s novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist engages with the results of
transnational immigration in general and the aftermath of 9/11 in particular. The novel offers a
post-colonial perspective regarding the aftermath of 9/11. Through using the protagonist of the
novel as an archetype, Mohsin Hamid portrays the trauma and the feeling of loss experienced
by oriental immigrants in the United States after the tragic event. In light of post-colonialism,
this paper argues that the protagonist, Changez, experiences a sense of unbelonging in both the
host country and the home country after the attacks of 9/11. He, it is also argued, undergoes
two types of exile: existential and internal. To test the hypothesis, three post-colonial concepts
coined by Homi Bhabha are employed: hybridity, unhomeliness and otherness. In addition, this
research traces the emergence of transnational literature as a literary genre under the influence
of globalization |
