Résumé : |
This dissertation aims at exploring and scouting the theme of rite of passage of the protagonist in William Faulkner’s novella “The Bear” which was published as part of Go Down, Moses in 1942.In his masterpiece “The Bear,” Faulkner displays the process that the protagonist Isaac McCaslin (Ike) goes through in order to reach manhood and attain both maturity and wisdom. In order to portray Ike’s path towards a world of maturity, Faulkner conveys a chain of interrelated events starting by the first hunt trip, to Ike’s immersion into the wilderness, up to the death of Old Ben which marks the transitory phase through which Ike passes to manhood and attains the most valuable lessons in his life. In fact, Ike acquires precious morals such as pride, courage, bravery, and freedom that would later help him to conduct the act of relinquishment of his heritage, which to Ike was a step whereby he frees himself from the burdens of his family's past and the sins of ownership and slavery. In doing so, Ike undertakes an act of redemption, hereby assuming himself as a redeemer who is paying back the debts of his family’s past |
