Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating students’ difficulties in understanding the vocabulary
of scientific texts. The main concern of this study is to cover the reasons behind this
problematic issue with scientific vocabulary and what they need to do in order to overcome
this problem. In this respect, it sheds light on the possible strategies that can help them solve
such problems. Therefore, the hypothesis assumed in this research is that if students face
difficulty with the vocabulary of scientific texts, they need strategies to cope with it. In an
attempt to do so, a questionnaire and a test were assigned to first-year Master Students
(Linguistics and Applied Language Studies Option) at the University of Mentouri BrothersConstantine 1. The analysis of findings has shown students’ problems with understanding,
identifying, and explaining scientific terms. This proves a great lack of their vocabulary
knowledge where they cannot even distinguish between technical and semi-technical terms.
Hence, this confirms the hypothesis of this research in which they need specific strategies to
deal with this problematic issue. |

This research work aims at investigating the effectiveness of using reading as a method to
enrich the students’ vocabulary. It seeks out the reasons behind the students’ lack of
vocabulary. First, we hypothesized that if learners tried to acquire vocabulary via specific
reading strategies, they would enrich their vocabulary size. We believe that reading is a very
important language skill which should take place in students’ priorities while building
vocabulary knowledge. To achieve such an aim, we leaned upon two means of research: a
students’ questionnaire and a test. The questionnaire was submitted to a sample of second
year LMD students (60 students) at the Foreign Languages Department, Mentouri University
Constantine. The results confirmed that learners’ lack of vocabulary is due to their ignorance
of the appropriate reading strategies and their importance |
