Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The African society endured so many changes during the colonial period that led to a post colonial period full of uncertainty, struggles and a newness which was not really well accepted by all the members of the society and the traditional African society saw its values, costumes and traditions altered by new European ways and values. The emergence of new thinking, new ideas and new beliefs mostly because of a new religion and a new western education led to the emergence of a new class of African people, an educated class that was in the center of all conflicts before and after independence. Its position in the society was not clear and its role was not easy to undergo. Intellectuals are being defined and identified from many different angles and between reality and expectations it was hard for this class to occupy a clear position in the African society scene. Issues over identity, over the perception of the future of the person as an individual and as a part of the society, also over old values and traditions are tearing apart this class of African individuals. In his novels Chinua Achebe points out to these intellectuals and identifies two aspects to the issues the African intellectual is facing in the African society. Chinua Achebe describes how the intellectuals identify themselves as individuals part of the society. He also depicts how the society sees those intellectuals and what it expects them to be and how to react considering its values and norms. In both of his novels A Man of the People and No Longer at Ease Chinua Achebe demonstrates the different points of view about the educated class and tries, in his way, to expose the elements at the origin of the problem. In each of his novels, C. Achebe treats in a different manner the different aspects of the issue, as well as the different struggles the intellectuals are facing throughout their quest to exist. This phenomenon dominates any field in the society when there is an absence of discipline and strong moral principles. This work is an exploration of Chinua Achebe's novel A Man of the People emphasizing on the theme of political corruption. Also, it discusses, the post-colonial Nigeria which ‘dives’ in an ocean of corruption from a little drop. Moreover, the work highlights some causes, consequences, and certain solutions to overcome corruption in African continent after the independence, under the lack and the absence of ethic leaders who are able to govern properly and with transparency their countries.
