Having the strongest navy in the world, Britain controlled all trading routes and overpowered many European rivals. The empire then became a major source of wealth and political prestige. By the end of the 19th century appeared the first signs of Britain’s economic decline and imperial retreat. Particularly after WWII, the world witnessed the eclipse of the British Empire and the rise of Third World nations.
