Résumé : |
The present study deals with the psychological factors that hinder EFL learners’ participation
in oral expression courses in the English Department at the University of Skikda. Throughout
this study, we hypothesize that students do not participate in oral expression courses mainly
due to psychological barriers (anxiety, fear of mistake, shyness…). To confirm this
hypothesis, we have used a sample of thirty (30) first year LMD students at the department of
English, University of Skikda and their teachers of oral expression. Our work is divided into
two parts. A theoretical part, where in a general overview about the speaking skills is
provided and the psychological obstacles that hinder students’ oral performance are deeply
described. The practical part of the study deals with the methodology adopted to conduct the
research in which we have analyzed the questionnaires that are administered to both students
and teachers of oral expression. The findings of the students’ questionnaire and the teachers’
questionnaire have shown that most of the students suffer from the negative effect of different
psychological factors which make them prefer to participate in some activities more than
others. Finally, based on the obtained data we have suggested some techniques and activities
that EFL students need to work with to overcome the stated difficulties. |
