Interpreting is more and more required in Algeria due to the nature of the business market
which is crucially based on the hydrocarbon economy and open to foreign investments, on
the other hand, idiomatic phrasal verbs are very important in everyday spoken English; and
those facts make it important to make a study about the problems which occur when students
try to interpret idiomatic phrasal verbs. The study hypothesized that the participants will find
problems in this process and that they will either misinterpret, give a literal interpreting, or
fail to give the exact meaning of the idiomatic phrasal verbs. In order to explore these
problems, an interpreting test was given to twenty students. The test consists of ten sentences
that included an idiomatic phrasal verb in each. The sentences were delivered orally, and the
students were asked to interpret them into Arabic. The research findings confirmed the
hypothesis. The participants did have problems with interpreting idiomatic phrasal verbs and
their problems ranged between misinterpreting, giving literal interpreting, and failing to give
the exact meaning of the idiomatic phrasal verbs. Besides the hypothesized problems,
students showed that they confuse between phrasal verbs that have the same verb part; and in
the process of interpreting, they focused on the verb part and cared less or totally ignored the

verbs. That is, avoidance of phrasal verbs. It seeks to look into this phenomenon
in relation to students’ interlanguage development. The complex structure and the
puzzling meanings of phrasal verbs often cause problems to students who
repeatedly tend to misuse them. For that, it was presumed that when students’
interlanguage develops, they will be able to overcome such problems. Hence, two
groups of students differing in their level of education were targeted to form the
population of the present research. Two tools were chosen to carry out the
empirical study: a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The test aimed at
examining the real use of the avoidance strategy among both groups of the
sample, while the questionnaire intended to elicit students’ personal opinions on
this subject. The obtained results show that although students’ interlanguage
improved, it cannot help much to overcome the problems encountered with
phrasal verbs. mistakes in students’ writings. Our main objective is to raise students’ awareness about
the usefulness of proofreading. At the same time, we want to check whether students
proofread their writings. Hence, we hypothesized that if 3rd year students accurately
proofread their writing; they will minimize mistakes, and thus produce good pieces of
writing. To check the research hypothesis and reach our aims, two research tools were
used: two questionnaires and an in-class writing test. One questionnaire was given to
teachers of writing at the department of languages. The other questionnaire and the test
were administered to 3rd year students at the same department. The analysis and the
discussion of the obtained data have shown that the students made a considerable
number of mistakes at the level of both form and content. That is, the students seem to
overlook the proofreading stage and thus often produce poor writings. After raising the
students’ awareness about proofreading they could reduce the number of mistakes in
their written products. English has gained a worldwide use to such a scale that the needs in English are not restricted to everyday communication but ubiquitous from simple domains to more sophisticated arenas. This dissertation focuses on ways to improve the students‟ language proficiency enabling them to cope with today‟s needs in English. The aim is to test two hypotheses that, “the low level of proficiency in English noticed in students in other departments, results from the current teaching of ESP that is merely language-based.” We hypothesize also that “High Language Proficiency would occur if students were learning and were being taught thematically”. This research project is based on a review of the related literature and makes use of two questionnaires: one for teachers and another for students. The findings of this research show that the majority of teachers of English in other departments focus more on language-based activities and neglect theme-based ones. Most teachers consider their students to be unmotivated, and their proficiency in English is classified to be below average. Other findings show that most students prefer theme-based activities to language-driven ones, and these students evaluate theme-based language teaching to be motivating and suitable for the improvement of their language proficiency. The main findings seem to corroborate our two hypotheses. The dissertation ends up with a number of recommendations so as to help students become more proficient to cope with today‟s needs in English. English has gained a worldwide use to such a scale that the needs in English are not restricted to everyday communication but ubiquitous from simple domains to more sophisticated arenas. This dissertation focuses on ways to improve the students‟ language proficiency enabling them to cope with today‟s needs in English.
