Résumé : |
One of the most important characteristics of a democratic country is “Tolerating Dissent”. This dissertation investigates the processes, functions and roles of Her Majesty’s most Loyal Opposition and its most important body “The Shadow Cabinet” in Britain. This work aims to prove the opposition’s worthiness in promoting democracy, curbing corruption, and most importantly as an alternative resort in time of crisis. In doing so, some light will be shed on this little-studied political institution by tracing back its beginnings, investigating its primary roles that allows it to achieve what it is beneficial to the country as a whole like scrutiny, accountability and being an alternative government. In addition to that a description to its way of operation, rights, privileges and cooperation with government will be given, as well as, the duties of its shadow ministers and the leader of the opposition who is considered as a prime minister-in-waiting. For a credible assessment to its power of influence and ability to be a resort in crisis, we seek proofs in two of its historic contributions in the major decisions that polarized British politics back then: The Poll Tax 1989-1990 and the War on Iraq 2003. |
