This study investigates the role that the context plays in the comprehension of idioms. It deals with the difficulties that foreign language learners face when dealing with idioms. The aim of the study is to examine the role of the context and to show to which extent it is helpful to clarify the idioms meaning. To check the validity of our hypothesis a test has been administrated to twenty three students of English. It is made up of two parts. The first part consists of fifteen idioms out of context with their answer choices. The second part consists of the same idioms, but in a text. The results show that students can guess the real meaning or at least the approximate one if the idiom is a transparent or a semi-transparent one but the context does not help them with idioms which carry an opaque meaning and sometimes it gets them even more confused. Yet the overall statistics reveal that the context plays a role in clarifying the meaning of idioms and our hypothesis has been confirmed. |

The present study aims at finding out to what extent students´ self-efficacy affects their writing performance. For this aim, we have hypothesized that students´ high sense of efficacy belief would have an impact on their writing achievement.
To test the validity of our hypothesis, we carried out the investigation through two questionnaires and a test. The first questionnaire was administered to a sample of “ Written Expression” teachers from the University of Constantine department of languages. The second questionnaire and the test were given to a sample of second year L.M.D students from the same department. Most of the results show somehow that there is, as we have hypothesized a relation between students´ self-beliefs and their writing attainment. |
