Résumé : |
This dissertation investigates the use of relative pronouns in both English and Arabic
languages. Its main purpose is to show to what extent English and Arabic relative pronouns
differ and if there is a one to one correspondence between Arabic and English relative
pronouns. And thus, it is hypothesized that “ there is no one-to-one correspondence between
English and Arabic relative pronouns” and “English and Arabic differ in their use of relative
pronouns in relation to some grammatical categories such as: gender, number, case,
person/non-person”. A parallel corpus is used in this study; it consists of an original text in
English and its translation in Arabic which is considered as the most appropriate method to
achieve the aim of this study and answer the research questions. The results obtained from the
analysis of the corpus indicate that there is no one-to-one correspondence between English
and Arabic pronouns, and both languages differ in their use of relative pronouns in relation to
some grammatical categories such as gender, number, case, and person/non person. That is to
say, the results obtained from the corpus analysis confirm the first hypothesis whereas the
second one is partially confirmed. |
