Résumé : |
EFL learners face many difficulties in learning and using the English tenses. The past
simple and the present perfect are among the most problematic tenses that students have
to learn. The present study aims to shed light on students’ confusion in using the past
simple and the present perfect. In our research, we tried to answer certain questions
about the reasons that confuse students when using the present perfect and the past
simple and eventual solutions that can help them reduce this problem. In order to
complete our research, we collected data through two questionnaires, one directed to
grammar teachers and the other to second year students. The analysis of both
questionnaires confirmed that students cannot use the present perfect and the past
simple correctly because they still have problems in applying the rules of these two
tenses as well as their forms. In addition, intensive practice was suggested to be the
solution to limit such problem. Therefore, students must have adequate knowledge of
both the present perfect and the past simple in addition to practice of what they learn,
and teachers are required to give a considerable attention to practicing these two tenses |
