Résumé : |
This dissertation aims at studying the relation between the British and the Indians
during the British colonization of India as depicted in E. M. Forster’s novel A Passage
to India. As a historical fact, the British came to India as traders at the time when the
East India Company enjoyed a significant power in the process of building the British
Empire. However, the Company's unhalved policies contributed to the Indian Mutiny,
which Britain took as expediency to take a direct rule in India, shifting, therefore, from
trade to colonization. Indeed, the British presence in India during the period of
colonization and the relationship between the British colonizer and the Indian people
are best depicted in Edward Morgan Forster's novel A Passage to India. In fact, Forster
describes the British colonization and its effects on both the Indian and the English
psyches, which itself have an influence on their interaction. In the analysis of Forster's
novel and the emphasis on the different characters representing the two sides, the
dissertation sheds light on the obstacles and boundaries which prevent any attempt of
friendship between the British and the Indians in the colonizer/colonized context |
