Résumé : |
The present study aims at investigating the effect of social environment factors on EFL learners‟ speaking skills. In other words, it is an attempt to see whether living in urban or rural areas can cause language anxiety or not. Thus, it hypothesized that the EFL learner, living in the city, will not face the problem of anxiety in speaking for being positively influenced by good social environment conditions. Meanwhile, the EFL learner, living in the village, will face the problem of anxiety in speaking for being negatively influenced by bad social environment conditions. The hypothesis was evaluated by an analytical study inferred from the results of a formal questionnaire handed to M1 English students at Mentouri University, Constantine. During the analysis of data, we used a “causal-comparative” study to compare urban and rural students. The analysis of the questionnaire revealed that students living in poor environments feel more anxious when speaking in class. In contrast, students living in rich environments feel less anxious when asked to speak in front of classmates. Hence, it is only a matter of exposure and practice. To some extent, the social environment can determine whether students are anxious or not. Accordingly, the hypothesis was validated after obtaining the results and we tried to put forward some recommendations to cope with the problem of the social environment |
