Résumé : |
The present study seeks to investigate the errors in the English modal system made by second
year students of English at Mentouri University Constantine. This investigation does not
encompass all the English modal system, only the modal auxiliaries must, may, can and the
semi modal have to are studied. The main aim is to find out the role of the target language,
i.e., the English language, in the engendering of these errors.
To gather the data needed as to confirm or refute the research hypothesis, a written test is used
to elicit a corpus of students’ errors in must, may, can and have to. This test consists of two
exercises. The first is a fill in the gaps exercise where students are asked to insert the correct
modal or semi modal. In the second, there are eight sentences that must be rewritten using
these modals or the semi modal. All the observed errors are examined in order to extract the
intralingual ones. The analysis of the obtained data has revealed, as we hypothesized, that
most of the errors made in the modal auxiliaries must, may, can and the semi modal have to
have an intralingual cause. In other words, they are due to the strategies employed by the
students to learn the English language rules. |
