The present study examines the relationship between using authentic materials and the improvement
of speaking skill for foreign learners, which are considered as a new meth in teaching the oral skill.
This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using authentic materials in enhancing the
students’ speaking skills. Therefore, we hypothesize that teaching the speaking skill through
authentic materials in foreign language classes will enhance students’ oral proficiency. To validate
the previous hypothesis, we used two questionnaires. The first questionnaire was administered to a
sample of 54 out of 344 students of second year LMD at the Department of Letters and English
Language University of “FréreMentouri” Constantine; the second one is given to 15 teachers of
Oral Expression at the same Department to get information about the impact of using authentic
materials in Oral Expression module in developing the students’ speaking skills. After the analysis
of the data collected from the two questionnaires, the results reveal that both learners and teachers
consider authentic materials as an important teaching aid, for they facilitate the teaching process by
increasing the learners’ language use which leads to improve their speaking skill. On the basis of
the results obtained, some recommendations have been proposed to help students overcome their
difficulties in order to improve their speaking skill, and others to guide teachers to effectively
implement this technique while teaching the oral skills. |
