Its complications constitute a public health problem.
It needs drugs, food diet and medical monitoring.
Now day, in therapeutically field, in addition to conventional treatment (insulin and oral hypoglycaeming
agents) use medicinal plants as complementary treatment as well as treatment in low glycemia.
Therefore phytotherapy constitutes a good alternative or at least as a complement to classical drugs.
In popular medicine, a lot of plants -among them, the Centaurium erythreae - are used in diabetic
treatment.
The first part of this work treats literature review on diabetes, phytotherapy and Centaurium erythreae L.
The second part consists of an experimental work that contains:
- Inquiries on the use of medicinal plants in our regions (east, south-east and Algiers region); 39 species
belonging to 24 families are noted.
- A chemical experiment of the flowering stems of the plant Erythreae centaurium L. has been done;
several products were identified( flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and tannins...).
- An experimental work on normoglycemic rats and rats submitted to hyperglycemia by oral means by
overcharge of glucose, by gavage of aqueous and butanolic extract of the Common Centaury. After
kinetic study of glycaemia between tB0 Band tB180 Bminutes by glycometery and spectrophotometer shows an
important decrease of blood glucose rates.
The hypoglycemic action of aqueous and butanolic extract was compared to that obtained
rats with hypoglycemic agent (Glibenclamide (DCI) Daonil ® (ND)
This shows the existence hypoglycemic action of Common Centaury.
- The monitoring of rats, during fifteen days after hyperglycemia shows secondary effects of aquous and
butanolic extracts of Common Centaury on liver and kidney rats’.Diplôme : Doctorat En ligne : ../theses/veterinaire/BEN5276.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=1871 Effets biologiques de la petite centaurée Erythraea centaurium (L.) الانباتIndex. décimale : 570 Sciences de la vie. Biologie Résumé : The prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica), it’s cactus of the genus Opuntia, which contains a many medicinal properties.
The organization of the genome study of this species by using the conventional cytogenetics methods: acetic carmine and silver nitrate (AgNO3) staining, indicates that this species is octoploid 2n = 88 with a base number x = 11. The karyotype reveals the presence of three types of chromosome. The coloration with a silver nitrate indicates a number of nucleoli varies from 1 to 4 with a majority of one nucleolus per cell found that there is an active site.
Our work has focuses also on Opuntia ficus indica cladods extracts study. The analysis of these extracts by HPLC and colorimetric tests shows the presence of some chemical groups (total polyphenols) capable of expressing the desired activity. Theirs antiradical activities are evaluated through chemical tests such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, DPPH, FRAP scavenging tests and the phosphomolybdate method. The result shows a high reducing activity of certain extracts.
The antibacterial activity of this extracts is evaluated by the solid medium diffusion and the MIC is determined by the liquid medium dilution methods. The results show that the EAc has the highest power on the Staphylococcus aureus strain.
The results of toxicology tests performed in vitro and in vivo, on erythrocytes blood isolates, larvae, rats and rabbits indicate that this plant has very low toxicity.
The various pharmacological tests perform in vivo of the aqueous extract of Opuntia ficus indica shows that it has important properties: hypoglycemic, very significant analgesic activity; using pain models induced by chemical and thermal stimuli, better wound contraction during the inflammatory response and the proliferative phase, and also it causes a significant improvement in hepatic antioxidant status in rats there were liver toxicity induced by CCL4.
Allelopathic compounds detected in the cladods of prickly pear are phenolic compounds that have an inhibitory effect on the germination and growth of the target plant.

Pistacia lentiscus L. is an evergreen shrub of 1 to 3 m high belonging to the family of Anacardiaceae. It is a traditional remedy which has been used by many ancient civilizations like Greeks and Egyptians. All parts of these plants have medicinal properties. However, the medicinal properties of vegetable oil extracted from fruits are particularly well known in North Africa, especially in the eastern region of Algeria to Tunisia. The inhabitants of these regions have used this oil for sore throat remedy, for treating skin burns and respiratory allergies.
The present work is a scientifc contribution to study some pharmacological and toxicological effects of this oil which kept our attention by its reputation in traditional medicine. The test of the Eye irritation / corrosion, showed that this oil is only slightly irritating to rabbit eye.
Similarly, the test of acute toxicity: Dermal irritation/corrosion allowed us to classify PLFO as slightly irritating to the skin, either intact or abraded. Repeated dermal toxicity test showed that this oil produced no edema, but a slight erythema was observed after the second week of application. This phenomenon is growing and regressing alternately until the end of the experiment, the latter does not exceed the rating of 2. One third of rabbits presented a phenomenon of local sensitization with skin thickening, which could reach 100% of the skin of the untreated regions. This phenomenon had been perfectly reversible and the skin has found its normal texture in a few days. As for the rectal route, the present oil was well tolerated. No anatomical or functional disturbance was observed in pathological examinations and histology. The biochemical parameters showed a significant decrease in AST and ALT
enzymes finding a positive impact of this oil on liver function. A significant increase in blood glucose, but still within the range of physiological norms, was recorded in suggesting a possible anti glycogenesis effect.
PLFO has also shown promising healing properties, this latter by reducing the inflammatory phase, stimulation of wound contraction and reducing the epithelization period.
The study concludes that Pistacia lentiscus fatty oil is effective for healing burns. It is tolerable in the short term, but may cause skin sensitization after prolonged use.
