In this work we have been interested by secondary metabolites of the Asteraceae family. Our interest has been on the sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids descended from the genus Centaurea. Thus a deep biographic study has established a collection of familiar and new structures of these molecules.
This study from 2005 until the end of 2012 showed that 51 species have been investigated. These works mention 174 structures variously varied for both of these metabolites, with a predominance noticed for the sesquiterpene skeleton which the majorities are guainolides.
Our phytochemical and biological experimentation on the Algerian species Centaurea melitensis L. has on one hand highlight the isolation of fourteen (14) molecules (only eleven (11) have been identified): Three germacranolides in the pure state, a mixture of two elemanolides, another mixture of two elemanes, three flavonoid aglycones and a phenolic acid.
On the other hand the working up of the antioxidant of the methanolic extract of our plant.
The determination of structures has been realised by combining the results of spectrometric and spectroscopic methods ﴾EIMS, UV, NMR-1D, 2-D﴿.Diplôme : Doctorat en sciences En ligne : ../theses/chimie/AYA6349.pdf Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/md/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=6324 Etude phytochimique et activité antioxydante de la plante Centaurea melitensis L. This study led to the isolation and identification of fifteen compounds of Cotula anthemoides and eight compounds of Pentzia monodiana including five phenolic acids, nine flavonoids from which one is new, three lignans, one sesquiterpene lactone, two glycosyl phenolics, a glycosyl acid, a diterpene and an nucleoside. The structural determination of the isolated compounds was established by the use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques (1H, 13C, COSY, HSQC, HMBC and ROESY), by mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and HRESI-MS) and by comparison with the literature data. The evaluation of the antioxidant activity by 4 methods (DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC and chelating by ferrous ions) of the various extracts, showed a good activity of extracts from P. monodiana compared to those of C. anthemoides. Furthermore, extracts of C. anthemoides showed an interesting anticholinesterase activity. However, both of lignanes, flavonol and flavones substituted in C-3, exhibited better antityrosinase and antiradical activities than some flavones only.

This work is devoted to the phytochemical study of Centaurea microcarpa Coss. and Dur. of the genus Centaurea (Asteraceae), endemic to Algeria and Tunisia. The phytochemical investigation of chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts obtained from the aerial parts of C. microcarpa, led to the isolation and identification of nine products.
The chloroform extract of this plant has permitted to isolate and identify four compounds which were: one cyanogenic glycoside, an eudesmanolide and tow steroids as a mixture each. While the ethyl acetate extract gave five compounds which were three flavonoids, one lignane and one cyanogenic. The structural elucidation of these compounds were established by modern spectroscopic methods including ultraviolet spectrophotometer, NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY, HSQC, HMBC and ROESY) and mass spectrometry HESI (+) and IEMS, and by comparison
with the literature data.
