Résumé : |
This current research deals with the difficulties that the students face, during their
studies or in their daily life, concerning the differences which do exist between American and
British English, particularly the distinctions between them in spelling and grammar. In view
of the fact that the two varieties are really different in the areas, as we mentioned above, our
aim is to explore students' familiarity or unfamiliarity with such differences and how they deal
with this dissimilarity during their studies. Distinguishing between the two seems to be a hard
task. Therefore; we hypothesise that the more students can differentiate between these two
encountered varieties, the more they will be successful learners. Hence, to investigate the
validity of this hypothesis, a questionnaire alongside with two tests were administrated and
the sample which is chosen is from third year students of the three specialities at the
Department of Constantine University 1 (Applied Linguistics, Language Sciences and
Civilisation). The achieved results reveal that the students are puzzled between the two
varieties and what is worse is that some of them are completely unconscious about the fact
that some differences do exist. What is noteworthy here is that Civilisation students prove
their awareness which is obtained from their study experience |
