Résumé : |
This paper represents a contrastive study of ellipsis in English and Arabic literary texts. It explores the area of translation from a descriptive point of view. The study explores the notion of ellipsis as a cohesive device with regard to the Arabic translated version of Hemingway’s ‘The old Man and the Sea’. It attempts to discover to what extent the translator has been able to translate elliptical items and whether he has preserved the author’s style in the target text. Some extracts have been compared and analyzed in terms of elliptical elements translatability; i.e. how ellipsis in English has been translated into Arabic, and what are the similarities and differences that lie between the two. The research work reveals that the translator in general was able to render the elliptical instances of the original text in Arabic because of the evident functional similarity of ellipsis. Some techniques were used to compensate partially for the loss in the source text. In general, the translator was mostly faithful to Hemingway’s inclusion of ellipsis as a feature of style. |
