The present research deals with the problem of translating polysemous phrasal verbs from English into Arabic and the reasons behind English foreign learners׳ miscomprehension and mistranslation of this type of verbs. Particularly, the study seeks to see if there is any relationship between EFL students' ability to give a synonym or an acceptable definition of English polysemous phrasal verbs in English and their ability to write their correct equivalents in Arabic. To investigate this relationship, a test has been given to a sample of 30 Algerian, third-year students of Applied Language studies in the Department of English at Mentouri University, Constantine. The test is one exercise which consists of twenty five sentences; each five sentences include the same phrasal verb. The participants are required to do the exercise in two parts: in part one, the participants were asked to define the phrasal verbs or give their synonyms in English, and then in part two, they were asked to translate them into Arabic. The results show, first, that the two variables mentioned above do correlate, and second that the majority of students are unable to define the suggested phrasal verbs and to infer their exact Arabic equivalents unless the sentences in which these verbs appear provide clear hints at the verbs' meanings. These results have proved the validity of the hypothesis which said that if third-year students are unaware of the meaning of a particular phrasal verb in the source language, they would not be able to give its right equivalent in the target language |
