Résumé : |
As EFL learner at the Department of English Constantine University 1 for five years, we
have seen how students' lack of motivation is a serious problem. The present research seeks to
investigate the impact of motivation on students’ speaking performance and to examine their
degree of awareness of its impact. Furthermore, at the end it provides a bunch of strategies that
help EFL learners and improving their motivation and it suggests how to increase their
motivation. In other words, the pedagogical recommendations provide some of the strategies
that learners need and prefer to use and to be used by their teachers to improve their motivation
in order to better their speaking performance. The research consists of two main chapters. The
first chapter contains two sections; the first section deals with speaking performance and skill’
definition, speaking components, types, problems, and end up by providing the appropriate
techniques to better and strength EFL learners’ speaking performance. The second section deals
with the concept of motivation in general, types, sources, theories, characteristics of a good
motivated learners and the factors affecting their motivation. To achieve these aims, we
hypothesize that if students have sufficient motivation, they will not find problems in improving
their speaking performance. In other words, the lack of motivation impacts the development of
learners' speaking performance. In order to accomplish these objectives and to confirm the
hypothesis, the study used a questionnaire of 18 closed-ended questions directed to thirty-five
(35) second-year English students at Mentouri University 1 – Constantine. The questionnaire
proves that learners' lack of motivation impacts their speaking performance negatively.
Furthermore, they are aware of the importance of both the speaking skill and the factor of
motivation in improving and upgrading their speaking performance and in need for some
methods to enhance and maintain their motivation. |
