Résumé : |
Students learning English as a foreign language, face difficulties in understanding and using
culture-bound collocations. One of the reasons is the deficiency in their English collocational
competence. The present study aims to investigate first year Master students’ awareness and
knowledge of culture-bound collocations by answering two questions: Are first year Master
students aware of culture bound collocations importance in language learning? Do they actively
and passively know culture bound collocations? To answer the study questions, a sample of 25
first year Master students are requested to answer a questionnaire and take a test. The
questionnaire gives insights about students’ awareness about culture bound collocations,
whereas the test explores the students’ active and passive knowledge of culture-bound
collocations. The findings of the study show that Master one students are aware of the
phenomenon of collocation and they can passively understand the meaning of some
collocations, whereas their collocational active knowledge is limited and needs improvement. |

Résumé : |
Studying at university requires from learners to develop academic skills in a number of
areas such as: writing, reading, speaking and listening. The present research sheds light on
one of the major technique note taking. This research investigates the frequency of note
taking techniques used by students at the University of Frère Mentouri Constantine. This
study is based on the hypothesis that say: if students take notes during lectures that will
help them revising lectures and realise better academic results. A questionnaire is designed
for first year English students investigating 12 questions, in addition to an experiment
which was designed to investigate students’ performance after a period of treatment in note
taking Three lectures have been taught to both experimental group; they have been taught
and asked to take notes in lectures controlled group; they have been taught same lectures
without taking notes, then a test was done to both groups to analyse effects of note taking
on achieving better results. The results have clearly shown that students who take notes
face facilities in revising what makes them realise better results in their academic tests. To
conclude students should develop skills in taking notes to enhance their academic results. |
