This study seeks to investigate one of the problems in translation the 1st year master students
encounter when carrying out the task of translation from English into Arabic. This problem is the
difficulties of translating English collocations into Arabic. The hypothesis of the present study
states that: if master 1 students use strategic methods in translating English collocations into
Arabic, then their Arabic version will be as beautiful as the English original. This study also tries
to examine this problem and show the crucial ways by which it may be overcome through a
theoretical survey of collocations in English and the administration of a test to a sample of 1st year
master students. The results of the study show that there are potential problems in the process of
translating collocations. Furthermore, the findings show that the context of use helps a lot of
students of English to guess the appropriate meaning of collocations. They also confirm that
students use much more the word-for-word translation as a strategy to deal with English
collocations. |

This research aims at investigating the translation difficulties faced by students when
translating verb-preposition collocations from Arabic into English. This translation
process will be examined throughout a teachers‟ questionnaire and a students' test.
The first part of the test is a multiple-choice task where students are limited to a
number of choices and are required to translate the Arabic verb-preposition
collocations within an English context. The second task is a free translation activity
where students are asked to translate seven Arabic sentences that contain verbpreposition
collocations from Arabic into English. The results of this test have shown
that students possess poor background knowledge about English collocations and that
they resort to their first language adopting a literal word-for-word translation. This
will lead to a negative transfer of the SL collocations. Hence, our hypothesis is
confirmed. However, the impact of these factors that cause these translation
difficulties can be reduced by rising students‟ awareness of the English collocations
throughout reading, practicing on these collocations and the use of specialized
collocations dictionaries. |

The reason for this study is to have a few experiences about the awareness of
collocations, and the diverse issues which the student may confront while translating
diverse sorts of collocations. We will attempt to test and assess their mindfullness by
examining their translation of English collocations into Arabic, and the other way around.
The study is done through a test devided into two sections. The first part is a test of
knowledge in which the students answer two separate questions depending on their
background knowledge about collocations. The second part is the translation of
collocations from English into Arabic and vice versa. The results of this research reveal
two main causes of third year students‟ errors in translating collocations. In the first place
students receive strict translation as the translation technique. Second, third year students
don't give enough significance to collocations which belong to another culture and
language. The main conclusion is that collocations are both a semantic and a social issue
and are not simply an issue of substituting words by their counterparts in the other
language. |

Students learning English as a foreign language, face difficulties in understanding and using
culture-bound collocations. One of the reasons is the deficiency in their English collocational
competence. The present study aims to investigate first year Master students’ awareness and
knowledge of culture-bound collocations by answering two questions: Are first year Master
students aware of culture bound collocations importance in language learning? Do they actively
and passively know culture bound collocations? To answer the study questions, a sample of 25
first year Master students are requested to answer a questionnaire and take a test. The
questionnaire gives insights about students’ awareness about culture bound collocations,
whereas the test explores the students’ active and passive knowledge of culture-bound
collocations. The findings of the study show that Master one students are aware of the
phenomenon of collocation and they can passively understand the meaning of some
collocations, whereas their collocational active knowledge is limited and needs improvement. |
