These terms are used by engineers and specialists in the field of oil in their original
language which is English. Even though it is not an English community, these
terminologies are used in their origin because they do not achieve any equivalent
translation in other language such as French or Arabic. The hypothesis made is that
there cannot be an appropriate equivalent translation. To prove or disprove this
hypothesis, a sample of 15 engineers who working in an oil company Enterprise
National de Services aux Puits (ENSP) Hassi Messaoud, are asked to give an adequate
equivalent translation from English to French language, without using borrowing. The
results shows that, it is impossible to come up with an appropriate translation to those

A learner or a
translator cannot pretend to have a mastery of any language if they do not have knowledge of
proverbs. Thus, learning a language or translation entails learning about proverbs which are a
reflection of the culture of that language. The present research paper investigates Algerian
Master one students’ knowledge and awareness about English and Arabic proverbs. The
sample of the study consists of twenty-five Master one students of English in Applied
Languages Studies, at Mentouri University, Constantine 1. Both a questionnaire and a
translation test are designed to answer the questions of the study. The questionnaire gives
insights about Master one students’ attitudes and perception of the importance of proverbs in
language learning and translation, whereas the test uncovers some of the difficulties that the
students encounter in the process of proverbs’ translation in both directions of English-Arabic
translation, as well as the different strategies they use during this process. The study reveals
that, though the students claim that they perceive proverbs as important elements in language
learning and translation, they do not make any serious efforts to improve their background
knowledge of proverbs. Some of the problems the students face in proverb translation include
failure to render a proverb by an equivalent proverb in the target language, failure in
understanding the meaning of proverbs whether in English or Arabic. The difficulties are
caused by the students’ poor cultural knowledge of proverbs both in Arabic and in English. To
overcome these obstacles, Master one students resort to paraphrasing and literal translation,
instead of rendering a proverb by an equivalent proverb in the target language. The study puts
forward some suggestions to improve Master one students’ proficiency in proverb translation
such as the use of dictionaries, extensive reading of cultural material and practicing translation

process will be examined throughout a teachers‟ questionnaire and a students' test.
The first part of the test is a multiple-choice task where students are limited to a
number of choices and are required to translate the Arabic verb-preposition
collocations within an English context. The second task is a free translation activity
where students are asked to translate seven Arabic sentences that contain verbpreposition
collocations from Arabic into English. The results of this test have shown
that students possess poor background knowledge about English collocations and that
they resort to their first language adopting a literal word-for-word translation. This
will lead to a negative transfer of the SL collocations. Hence, our hypothesis is
confirmed. However, the impact of these factors that cause these translation
difficulties can be reduced by rising students‟ awareness of the English collocations
throughout reading, practicing on these collocations and the use of specialized
