Résumé : |
Code-switching is a sociolinguistic phenomenon that occurs when a speaker uses more than
one language in his discourse. The good example of this phenomenon is found among EFL
learners who switch codes from their mother language to English and vice versa in their
speaking. This study aims to shed light on the phenomenon of code-switching and show the
extent of using English in the daily discourse by English students in addition to check if learning
the English language affects students’ speaking; advanced students tend to switch to English
more in their informal settings than beginner students. In order to test our hypothesis, a
questionnaire was administrated to two different levels, first year undergraduate and first year
Master students. The main objective of this questionnaire is to collect data based on the
students’ answers and to see the attitudes of students towards code-switching. Students of
English at Frères Mentouri University, Constantine 1, are considered to be our population of
this study; the sample was taken randomly from two different levels: first year undergraduate
and first year Master English students. According to statistical analysis, first year Master
students switch codes more than first year students. This indicates that first year Master students
are more qualified and competent at English since they have been learning it for many years,
which leads them to the use English words in informal settings unconsciously. Thus, our
hypothesis was confirmed, and we can conclude that the more students learn English for several
years, the more they would switch codes |
