accurate use of definite and indefinite articles as well as investigating the way EFL learners at
the Department of Letters and English Language, Frères Mentouri Constantine 1 University,
describe the influence of Arabic as a native language on their use of the English articles. To
serve this aim, sixty first year students were selected randomly as a sample to represent all
first year classes. It is hypothesized that the interference of Arabic L1 would influence
negatively first year students‟ use of articles in their English writings. Written productions of
the sample were analysed in order to figure out the different types of errors committed in the
use of articles, while a questionnaire was administered to a smaller sample composed of
twelve students who were randomly selected from the first sample in order to investigate their
points of view and attitudes towards language transfer in the use of English articles. The
findings reveal that most of the committed errors in students‟ paragraphs are related to Arabic
interference. Therefore, this research recommended that students and teachers should focus on

developing the communicative abilities of second year university students at the English
Department. In order to check this correlation, we have hypothesized that if teachers use
cooperative learning in class, they will be able to help Second-Year English students to
enhance their communicative competence in speaking skill. To test the validity of our
hypothesis, we have carried out an investigation through a students’ questionnaire and a
teachers’ questionnaire. Students’ questionnaire consists of fifteen questions and administered
to ninety second year students at the English Department. The teachers’ questionnaire is
composed of fourteen questions given to eight teachers of oral expression. The results of the
study have shown that the use of cooperative learning has positive effect on communicative

Quran as rendered in the English translation of the well known translators, namely:
Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan. It attempts to determine
the extent to which this translation has succeeded in capturing the metonymy in the selected
Quranic verses in the light of the exegesis of al-Jalalayn. To achieve the goals of the study,
we selected ten examples of metonymic expressions from different surahs of the Holy Quran.
After that, we paralleled the interpretations of these expressions with the corresponding
translated English version. Furthermore, we attempted to determine whether the translators
missed or captured the correct meaning of these expressions, as given in the exegesis. The
findings obtained from the analyses of the related data indicated that metonymy is an evident
phenomenon in the Holy Quran and in many cases the translators missed the metonymic

that if learners use their L1 as a selective lexical source, this would result in better L2
vocabulary learning. Striving towards finding answers to these questions, one research
intrument is adopted: a questionnaire designed using Microsoft Word and administered to the
students in classrooms concurrently to Third Year students of English, University of
Constantine 1. The results obtained from this study demonstrate that students recognize the
phenonmenon of language transfer and are able to exhibit different reasons why they use
language transfer, mentioning of these reasons it is to better express themselves in different
contextual spoken or written interactions, which they think helped them develop more TL or
L2 vocabulary understanding and competence, besides strongly accepting the role of transfer

their hands. Three tools of research are used for this investigation, a questionnaire, an interview,
and a test. The results obtained suggest that most participants recognize the presence of
nonverbal communication in their daily communication. They are able to form relative
definitions of nonverbal communication and they strongly accept the role of hand gestures in
their EFL learning course, specifically, in terms of vocabulary, illustration and speech fluency.
However, the students show little willingness to consider hand gestures as a possible learning
