We can never overstate the role that cohesion plays in writing coherent essays. The use of
these different cohesive linkers that are explicit on the surface of texts in addition to the logical
sequencing of ideas that is text internal help to create and produce a coherent piece of writing.
Consequently, cohesion is considered as an important tool that helps to ensure coherence in
writing. This research reports on the importance of cohesive devices to writing coherent texts.
The ability to write effectively hangs upon using adequate and appropriate cohesion. This
research work aims at evaluating the importance of using cohesive devices appropriately, and
how this can be a useful means for achieving coherence and thus improve the students writing
performance. This investigation takes place in the Department of Letters and English Language.
University of Constantine 1. To achieve this aim we relied on two means of research: the
questionnaire and the test (essay writing). The students’ questionnaire was used to collect data
about the cohesive devices that are commonly used by the students and the difficulties that
they encounter in using them. The students’ written text is designed to investigate the different
types of cohesive devices used by the learners and to what extent they help to secure the
coherence of their writing. The results of this investigation confirmed the hypothesis and
showed that the learners–subjects of the study–do not use cohesive devices appropriately, and
in cases of appropriate use, cohesion alone is not sufficient to achieve coherence; it needs a
textual internal logic. On the basis of the results obtained, some pedagogical implications have
been proposed toward the effective way to use cohesive devices |
