Résumé : |
Foreign or second language students often face many problems in trying to read and
comprehend written texts. Reading strategies, however, can contribute to facilitate the
reading process and help students to extract meaning about what they are reading. The
present study aims to explore the effect of skimming and scanning as two common reading
strategies on first- year English students’ reading comprehension at the University of
Constantine 1. The hypothesis postulated is that if first-year English students learned to use
reading strategies especially skimming and scanning more appropriately, they would be
able to apply them to cope with difficult English texts and become effective English
readers. In order to check this hypothesis, a questionnaire and a comprehension test were
administered to first-year university students in order to collect responses about their
awareness of and ability in applying skimming and scanning strategies when they read.
The data obtained from both the questionnaire and the comprehension test indicate that
first-year English students do not know how to apply skimming and scanning as reading
strategies to facilitate comprehension. Furthermore, the results suggest that these two
strategies are really effective to build up comprehension in short time. Thus, the hypothesis
postulated goes hand in hand with the results obtained. |
