Résumé : |
The issue of gender roles is a central theme in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God. The basic interest of this study is to conduct a substantial exploration of the feminine quest for identity in the novel. This dissertation endeavors to exhibit the patriarchal barriers that most twentieth century African American women had to cross over in order to find their own voices. Ergo, the goal of the study is to shed light on how Hurston depicts the struggle of black women to achieve their selfhood. In this regard, the research is helpful to convey the different ways through which a woman can overcome the oppressive and sexist societal norms.

Résumé : |
The present study is conducted to investigate the relationship between third year EFL
(English as Foreign Language) students‟ understanding of scientific texts and the use of the
passive voice. For that we hypothesized that if third year students of applied languages at the
Department of Art and English Language at the University of Brothers Mentouri can master
the use of the passive voice they may understand better scientific discourse. In an attempt to
check if our hypothesis is valid or not, we used a scientific text with twenty comprehension
questions. The analysis of the results has shown that there is a relationship between the
mastery of the grammatical structure of either the active or the passive sentences and the
comprehension of the scientific texts and the influence of the active or the passive voice
mastery on scientific texts comprehension is almost the same which supports the idea that the
mastery of the passive voice is not the only factor that impacts the students‟ understanding of
scientific texts. So according to the results of the test, we can say this confirms our hypothesis
which is: the use of the passive voice facilitates the understanding of scientific texts |
