Résumé : |
No one can deny the great power of words in any language learning. Certainly they are the
column of language either in writing, speaking, listening or reading. This research reports the
importance of vocabulary acquisition in enhancing students’ writing performance. Students of
English as a second or foreign language generally face problems in their writing performance.
To deal with these problems, they have to follow certain instructional strategies that provide
them with a good vocabulary knowledge and show how the importance of vocabulary can
help them for better acquisition of the language and enhance their writing performance. In
order to show the validity of this hypothetical statement, two groups of second year students
took part in this study through answering a questionnaire of thirty interrelated questions. The
educational setting in which this study took place is the department of Letters and English
Language of the faculty of letters and languages , at Mentouri Brothers university
Constantine. A further questionnaire was addressed to teachers. The questionnaire for
students was used to investigate about their vocabulary learning strategies, and how they deal
with the writing performance problems. The questionnaire for teachers was used to collect
data about the techniques they use when dealing with unknown words in their lessons and
how they can help students to enhance their writing performance. The results of this
investigation confirmed the hypothesis and showed that if students hold high level of
vocabulary, they would promote their level of achievement in writing. |
