Résumé : |
The present research work aims at exploring the problem of misspelling among the learners
of English, especially as a foreign language. To achieve this purpose, we conducted this study
at Mentouri University in Constantine. It is mainly intended to determine the several sources
of confusion in the spelling of English and to shed light on the most problematic areas
therein. Interest in this subject matter stems from the importance of developing the students’
spelling skills in order to grow into good writers and hence good language users. We
hypothesized that if second-year English students are aware of the spelling rules and
strategies, then they would make less spelling mistakes. For checking the validity of this
hypothesis, a test was carried out. It consisted of twenty simple sentences containing two
spelling propositions each; the participants had to choose the right one. On the whole, the
analysis of the data has revealed that the students face problems because they are unaware of
the basic spelling rules and strategies, they do not put into practice those rules they know,
they overlook words’ constituent parts (i.e. prefixes, stems and suffixes), but also because the
English spelling is very complex. These findings came to confirm the hypothesis established
at the outset of this study |
