of English, especially as a foreign language. To achieve this purpose, we conducted this study
at Mentouri University in Constantine. It is mainly intended to determine the several sources
of confusion in the spelling of English and to shed light on the most problematic areas
therein. Interest in this subject matter stems from the importance of developing the students’
spelling skills in order to grow into good writers and hence good language users. We
hypothesized that if second-year English students are aware of the spelling rules and
strategies, then they would make less spelling mistakes. For checking the validity of this
hypothesis, a test was carried out. It consisted of twenty simple sentences containing two
spelling propositions each; the participants had to choose the right one. On the whole, the
analysis of the data has revealed that the students face problems because they are unaware of
the basic spelling rules and strategies, they do not put into practice those rules they know,
they overlook words’ constituent parts (i.e. prefixes, stems and suffixes), but also because the
English spelling is very complex. These findings came to confirm the hypothesis established

Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Applied Language Studies Correlation Instant Messaging Students’ Spelling Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : This study aims at identifying the correlation between the use of instant messaging and
students’ spelling of English words for third year at the Department of Letters and English
Language, at Mentouri Brothers University, Constantine. The hypothesis upon which our
research is based on hypothesize if third year students would tend to make a lot of spelling
mistakes of English words when they use instant messaging for daily communication. For the
sake of testing the stated hypothesis, a survey and a test was handed to 63 third year students.
The obtained results showed that the frequent use of instant messaging does not have any
relation with students’ spelling mistakes of English words; the calculation of the coefficient of
correlation (r =-0.18) indicated a very weak association between the main variables, which
does not confirm our hypothesis. Despite of this, the study has contributed to the literature on
the influence of new forms of communication on writing skills, which is still a newly
investigated subjectDiplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8930 The correlation between the use of instant messaging and students’ spelling of english words : the case of third year students of english at mentouri brothers university [texte imprimé] / Fatima Zohra Fergani, Auteur ; Fatima Zahra Zouaoui, Auteur ; Rym Kemmouche, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2016 . - 52 f. ; 30 cm.
