University of Mentouri, Constantine, have of the use of capital letters and punctuation marks
especially the hyphen and the colon; this work also aims to show the crucial role of
punctuation and capitalization in writing and how the effective use of these mechanics can
help in conveying the exact meaning, more precisely the right use of the colon and the
hyphen, and, thus, can enhance their performance in writing and prevent ambiguity. The use
of punctuation marks and capital letter seems to pose many difficulties because of the
different usage and multiple rules and exceptions that most of the students either ignore or
simply refuse to apply. Through our hypothesis, we intended to investigate student’s
consciousness of the importance of mechanics, especially capital letters, the colon and the
hyphen. To achieve our objective, data have been collected through the administration of a
questionnaire and a test which were given to a sample of students. The results obtained have
confirmed our hypothesis. The findings in the questionnaire are contradictory to the results of
the test; that is to say, in the questionnaire, students seem to be aware of the importance of
mechanics, yet, this does not match their performance in the test. Therefore, this study
recommends an explicit teaching of the basic rules, use and misuse of capital letters and
punctuation marks (the colon and the hyphen) and a set of illustrative examples which will
help the students to overcome those difficulties and enhance their performance in writingDiplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3849 Writing problems that students encounter while using capital letters, colon and hyphen : The case of second year L.M.D students of English [texte imprimé] / Magdalena Szymczyk, Auteur ; Nedjwa Biraz, Auteur ; Youcef Beghoul, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2011 . - 108 f. ; 30 cm.
