Résumé : |
The present research sought primarily to investigate learners‟ of English awareness and familiarity with English idioms and the degree to which idioms affect the ease of written texts comprehension and interpretation. This was attempted through investigating their reading comprehension skill which, as hypothesized in the present work, is likely to be hindered by their insufficient knowledge about English idiomaticity. Idioms are expressions with a figurative meaning usually thorny to understand solely on the basis of the literal meaning of their individual constituent words. In the course of this study, first year master learners of English at the University of Mentouri Constantine constituted the sample population for this study. Their reading comprehension of written discourse have been tested in order to find out whether it is/is not impeded by their lack of knowledge about idiomatic expressions. The research results have shown that learners should improve their background knowledge about idioms and idiomaticity so that their reading comprehension would be enhanced. |
