Vocabulary is the most difficult aspect to learn in a foreign language; there are no set up rules for the acquisition of vocabulary. Foreign language learners may spend all their life acquiring new words; it is a non-stop process. The present research, however, aims to show the role of antonyms as one of the strategies used to learn as many lexical items as possible of the target language rapidly and easily. A sample of learners of English at Mouloud Kacem Neit Belkacem Secondary School has been divided into two groups: one of them was given a session on antonyms whereas the other was not; then, a test of three activities was administered to both groups in order to test the rapidity and easiness of vocabulary learning. The findings have proved that the group which had taken a session on antonyms performed better than the group that had not been introduced to antonyms. |
