The present study aims at investigating whether Algerian students at the department of
Foreign Languages, Mentouri University, Constantine, who come from scientific
backgrounds, are able to produce better scientific translations from English into Arabic than
students belonging to non-scientific backgrounds. In order to achieve that, two means of a
research tool were administered. The data in this study have been collected from a
questionnaire and a test. A sample of thirty students is chosen randomly to answer the
questionnaire and the test as well. The test involves seventeen scientific sentences in English
with different levels of difficulty. However, the questionnaire contains fourteen questions.
After the analysis of the results, it has brought out that the majority of scientific students have
succeeded in finding appropriate equivalents for most of the scientific terms. The other kind
of students faces serious difficulties in scientific translations. The research results confirm our
hypothesis which states that students coming from science disciplines translate scientific texts
more effectively than students coming from non-scientific ones. |
