Applied Languages Studies Using Punctuation Impact Students’ Writing |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This dissertation aims at studying the students‘ awareness of punctuation marks impact on their writing and identifying the deficiencies in using them. Since punctuation plays a crucial role in inferring the exact meaning, this work aims at recognizing how the right use of these marks improve one‘s written product. We assume that students would produce an effective writing, if they were aware of punctuations rules on the one hand and practised these rules on the other hand. To achieve our objective, we will conduct a questionnaire and a test with fifteen Master two Applied Linguistics students of English at the department of Foreign Languages, University of Constantine. The results are in compliance with to the hypothesis because the questionnaires results seem contradictory to those of the test. In spite of the student‘s awareness of punctuations importance, their results were too weak. This is the reason why shedding light on this particular aspect of writing seems of great interest to us. |

Applied Language Studies Scientific Texts Second Year |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This research aims at investigating the abilities of the Second Year Master Students of
biology in the translation of scientific texts from English into Arabic. The aim of this study is
to find out whether students have difficulties in translation, what these difficulties and what
the underlying reasons are. In order to test the hypothesis, a test and a questionnaire were
presented. The results revealed that the students faced several problems which made them
unable to translate this type of texts properly and appropriately. The most difficult problem
was the students’ ignorance to rely on an appropriate method in order to produce high quality
scientific translation; in addition to this it was put forward that the reason for the difficulties
faced by the students was the lack of translation in their academic study. Through this
analysis, the students were taught to suggest recommendations as a solution to the above
difficulties in order to facilitate the translation process |

Language Sciences effet gender learners. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This work examines the effect of teachers’/learners’ interaction on learners’ speaking fluency be they of the same gender or different.
It attempts to assess teacher’s awareness of the way to interact with their learners to promote their fluency in speaking. Thus, we hypothesise that if teachers interacted with learners of the same gender as theirs, the student’s speaking fluency would be affected. To test this hypothesis, two questionnaires have been used, the first one is concerned with secondary school learners and the second one targets their teachers. These questionnaires try to shed light on some concepts related to our problem statement, such as speaking and teachers’ /learners’ interaction.
The results obtained revealed that despite the differences between the two genders in language classroom, gender does not really affect second language learners’ speaking fluency. |

Applied Languages Studies Stress-shift Complex Words Non-native Learners’ |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This dissertation exposes students’ viewpoints about stress-shift in complex words while
listening to native speakers. We can say that learning the rules of stress together with listening
to native speakers may be a good method to master pronunciation and stress-shift, henceforth,
producing correct stress patterns. In order to confirm or disconfirm this hypothesis, a test and
a questionnaire are administered to Master-one students at Constantine 1 University. The
objective is to know if students rely on listening to overcome stress-shift handicap and
therefore improve their pronunciation. Hence, the analysis shows that stress-shift is difficult
and impedes students’ listening comprehension for most of them. So, listening is a necessary
process to get rid of these obstacles (although they claim the opposite. That is to say, in the
test, the majority of students’ answers are correct concerning stress placement and stressshift). |

Language Sciences Background Classical Speaking Skills |

Résumé : |
Music has been used to aid cognitive processing for decades, and an increasing number of
educators have attempted to maximize the learning process by integrating music in their
curricula. This dissertation was intended to investigate the cognitive and psychological effects
of classical background music in the area of learning foreign languages. In order to achieve
the objectives of this research, an extensive study of related literature was included and a
practical research was carried out. Two tests were implemented to both secondary school
pupils and university students; one proficiency test was conducted to assess the participants’
level in English proficiency, and another test was designed to check the participants’
performance in reading comprehension in different conditions. Two questionnaires were also
conducted for teachers, students and pupils of our interest. One questionnaire was carried out
to check the students’ and pupils’ opinions about the usefulness of music in foreign language
classrooms. Whereas the other questionnaire was implemented to see how teaching foreign
languages with the inclusion of music will be done from the teachers’ point of view. The
results obtained from both the quantitative and qualitative research showed that both the
learners and the teachers are more convinced by the psychological effects of classical music.
In other words, they claimed that music will help more in lowering learners’ anxiety and
increasing their self-confidence than in improving their concentration and memorization
abilities. This research produced a number of key findings that lead us to imply some
suggestions that may help in teaching and learning foreign languages. For example, music can
be considered as a valuable pedagogical tool but with limits, and teachers should be selective
when choosing the appropriate music that positively affects the mental and affective state of |
