Résumé : |
This research focuses on a specific genre of discourse which is that of household appliances booklets. It aims at exploring how English and Arabic express imperative forms in these instruction manuals and the reason behind using such kind of materials. Showing the characteristics of English and Arabic imperative verbs in household appliances instructional booklets, and providing a better understanding of the purpose behind using such imperative structures is at the top of interest in this work. This dissertation includes a descriptive analysis of a sample of six (6) booklets. The same discourse genre is provided in each booklet in both languages: Arabic and English. The obtained results from this research show that each of the two languages has its own preferences, structures, and styles when expressing directive imperatives in household appliances booklets.
The main conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that English tends to be more directive and provides the necessary information in a clearer and more explicit way than Arabic which seems somehow ambiguous and confusing in some sections of the booklets under investigation. Hence, this vagueness may lead users to misunderstand the instructions and use the appliance inappropriately |
