T h e purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between reading
anxiety and its effects on reading comprehension in a foreign language. Through our
hypothesis, we attempted to investigate whether this anxiety influences reading
comprehension negatively. The population sample of the study is 38 third year LMD students
at the Department of Foreign Languages, Mentouri University of Constantine, Algeria.
To achieve this goal, we have collected data using multiple instruments, such as Saito,
Garza and Horwitz (1999) Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS), in order to
investigate the anxiety levels that students face when they read in English. In addition, a
reading comprehension test was achieved in order to show whether reading anxiety influences
the students’ level in understanding English texts.
The results show that Foreign Language Reading Anxiety (FLRA) exists among the
majority of the participants and there is a significant negative correlation between Foreign
Language (FL) anxiety and reading comprehension. As such, the hypothesis is confirmed:
higher levels of anxiety in the students affect negatively their performance in the reading
comprehension of texts in English |
