Applied Languages Studies Difficulties Translating Idioms |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
This study attempts to investigate the difficulties that can face third year license
students of Applied Linguistics when translating idiomatic expressions from English into
Arabic. It also attempts to provide the main strategies they use in order to translate them. It
focuses on the learners'awareness of the hidden and invisible meaning of idioms and to
what extent they are able to find the equivalence of those idioms in the target language. So,
if students of translation were not aware of both the source and the target culture of idioms,
they would have difficulties to find the suitable strategy to translate them. A translation task
has been designed to see what are the main difficulties that the learners face and the main
strategies they use in order to translate idioms. The analysis of the learners'performance
reveals that they lack awareness of the hidden meaning of idioms and they are unable to
choose the suitable strategy to translate them. In this respect, it is recommanded that
learners and teachers of translation and linguistics should pay attention to such issues |
