Résumé : |
The present study is conducted to compare between students who used to belong to the Scientific and
Literary stream during high school years as regard to their comprehension within EST texts. This
work is an attempt to diagnose the problematic areas that make the difference within levels of both
categories of students with the objective of finding possible solutions to balance all students' level.
Therefore, we hypothesise that if First year Master students of Applied Linguistics belonged to the
scientific stream during high school, their level in comprehending EST texts is likely to be better than
the level of students who belonged to the literary stream. In an attempt to test the validity of the
hypothesis, a sample of twenty four First Year Master Applied Linguistics Learners from the
Department of English, University of Constantine 1 is purposefully chosen; a questionnaire and a test
are used as means to gather the needed data. The results obtained from these two means are analyzed
and compared and the outcomes of the study prove the hypothesis. Results have showed that the level
of scientific students in comprehending Scientific and technical texts is better than the level of
Literary students. Hence, students who used to belong to the Literary stream during high school years
have more difficulties in understanding scientific/technical texts. |

Applied language studies english-arabic switching classrooms. |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
The present study carries out an investigation of code switching in the English classrooms at
Mentouri University, Constantine 1. This study tends to show the different language patterns
used among university students; it focuses on the English-Arabic code switching and if
students understand more when they switch codes to their native language. To spot light on
the linguistic phenomenon of code switching, we draw various definitions and aspects of the
phenomenon. Two principal questionnaires for teachers and students are held respectively and
a classroom observation takes place in order to collect the necessary data for the research.
Seventy third year students of English participate in answering the questionnaire while
another one is submitted to twenty teachers of English chosen randomly from the department
of English at Mentouri University, Constantine 1. Both of the questionnaires and the
classroom observation test the main research hypothesis that assumes that if students switch to
their mother tongues, they understand more and systematically they gain an academic
achievement. The analysis shows that code switching in EFL classrooms is exist in a way or
another among students and sometimes even teachers do perform it. Moreover, the analysis
reveals that the use of code switching depends on the nature of the topic. Finally, we can
deduce that findings support two of our hypotheses, that code switching helps the students to
be proficient in English and the students’ language choice is affected by the choice of the
topic. However, for the last hypothesis which states that teachers may show negative attitudes
towards code switching, the results show that most of the teachers do not express these
negative attitudes towards code switching. |

Misuse of Grammatical Collocations Writing Proficiency Prepositional Collocations. |
Index. décimale : |
420 Langue anglaise |
Résumé : |
This study is conducted to investigate the effect of misusing grammatical collocations,
specifically prepositional ones on the writing proficiency of third year students at the
Department of English, University of Constantine 1. This research is an attempt to answer the
raised questions and to test the validity of the hypothesis which assumes that the more
students misuse grammatical collocations, namely prepositional collocations, the less
proficient their writing will be. In an effort to test the hypothesis validity, a random sample of
fifty-one (51) students of third year is intentionally chosen. As data gathering tools, a test is
given to the students to evaluate their level in both prepositional collocations and in writing.
A questionnaire is also submitted to thirteen (13) teachers of Grammar and Written
Expression at the same department in order to have an idea about their opinions and attitudes
towards the level of the students with regard to the two research variables. After analyzing the
data collected from both test and questionnaire, the results show that students of third year
avoid using grammatical collocations, namely prepositional collocations, because they misuse
them; consequently, their language proficiency in writing in negatively influenced.
Accordingly, some recommendations are proposed as an attempt to overcome this problem. |

humor jokes puns sarcasm humor in linguistics cross-cultural study. |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
Humor is personal. It reflects one’s feelings, way of thinking, and even culture. However, it is also
shared by all members of different social groups and different cultures. Since learning a specific
region’s culture is a necessity if one wants to master their language, this study investigates the
possibilities of the target language’s culture influencing learners’ perception and use of humor.
This research is a comparison between students of English and students of Arabic in terms of humor
perception and use. We hypothesize that students of Arabic and students of English have developed
different humor perception and use due to being exposed to two different languages along with
their cultures. To test the research hypothesis, a questionnaire and a test have been administered to
two groups of students; thirty students of Arabic and thirty students of English of third year. The
results reveal that indeed there is a difference between students of Arabic and students of English
in terms of humor perception and use. The two groups of students prefer different types of humor,
and use it differently. Even their general knowledge about the topic defers. |

Difficulties in Translating Arabic into English and vice versa . |
Index. décimale : |

Résumé : |
The present study is conducted to investigate the difficulties that students encounter when
translating scientific texts from Arabic to English and the opposite. This work is an attempt to
see the problematic areas that make students fail in translation intending to find the possible
solutions to overcome this failure hence, to enhance their performance. On light of this, it has
been hypothesized that if students raise their awareness and have good scientific knowledge
they will not find any difficulty concerning terminological translation and their performance
will be enhanced. To test the hypothesis a questionnaire has been administered to translation
teachers with a test to students of Master One in the Department of English, University of
Constantine 1. The analysis of the findings have given a clear picture of the students’
inability to translate scientific English and Arabic terminology due to many factors among
which students lack enough vocabulary knowledge and the ignorance to select the right
method. Through the analysis, recommendations as the main reasonable solutions have been
suggested to overwhelm the above difficulties in order to facilitate the translation process and
especially the scientific translation. |
