Résumé :	This study aims at identifying the correlation between the use of instant messaging and students’ spelling of English words for third year at the Department of Letters and English Language, at Mentouri Brothers University, Constantine. The hypothesis upon which our research is based on hypothesize if third year students would tend to make a lot of spelling mistakes of English words when they use instant messaging for daily communication. For the sake of testing the stated hypothesis, a survey and a test was handed to 63 third year students. The obtained results showed that the frequent use of instant messaging does not have any relation with students’ spelling mistakes of English words; the calculation of the coefficient of correlation (r =-0.18) indicated a very weak association between the main variables, which does not confirm our hypothesis. Despite of this, the study has contributed to the literature on the influence of new forms of communication on writing skills, which is still a newly investigated subject
