The present study aims at investigating the relationship between students’ perceptions of their selfesteem
and their speaking performance in English as a foreign language (EFL Henceforth). Based
on the aspects investigated, a hypothesis was put: If teachers focus on the role of self-esteem and try
to motivate students in the classroom then, learners will develop their speaking abilities. The
research methodology adopted in this study is a descriptive one. It works on describing two
variables: Self-esteem as the presumed independent variable and English foreign language speaking
as the presumed dependent variable. To test our hypotheses, we carried out the investigation through
a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire is administered to a sample of 15“Oral
Expression” teachers from the Department of Letters and English Language at the University of
Brothers Mentouri, Constantine. The interview is handled to a sample of 40 third year L.M.D
students from the same Department at Brothers Mentouri University –Constantine. Most of the
results of the analysis have shown that there is, somehow, congruence between students’ beliefs and
their speaking achievement |
