The research conducted in this modest work tends to evaluate the students’ awareness of the
role of the culture and the social conventions in the recognition of metaphor’s sense in
translation which poses difficulty because of their cultural depended meaning. That is why the
core of this research is to explore the reason behind such roughness that almost all students of
English face when translating English metaphorical expressions into Arabic. Thus, it can be
hypothesized that if these students are sufficiently exposed to the English culture and aware of
its role in the shaping of distinct speech communities, they will translate metaphors correctly.
The study is carried out through two translation tasks. The results have revealed that the
majority of students are unable to translate metaphorical expressions in the first task, whereas
positive response in the second task was shown because of the availability of the context of
those expressions as used in the source language |
