Résumé : |
The following study is an investigation in the field of learning English in Algeria. It
focuses on the status of French in the EFL classroom. Therefore, the aim of this
research is based on the advantages of using the French language in the process of
learning English at university of Constantine and it discusses the learners’ attitude
toward the use of French and its influence on the English language learning and also
studies whether the first year students of English at University of Constantine1 use
French as a medium to complete the lack of vocabulary and if this is an enhance to
their vocabulary material. The present work consists of two chapters: The first
chapter, a theoretical one, is divided into two sections. Section one emphasizes the
linguistic situation in Algeria through history, the influence of the French language on
the English one and some similarities and differences between them. Section two
focuses on vocabulary and its importance in learning languages, cognates their types
and some examples of English words that have a French origin. Chapter two is
practical. It deals with a questionnaire given to a sample of first year students of
English. It aimed to show the degree of the French language influence on English and
whether or not French helps the EFL learners to develop their vocabulary skills. The
results show that students rely on French to speak English and so this confirms our
hypothesis. |
