Résumé : |
The present study investigates the effects of intensive connected speech training on the
enhancement of L2 listening comprehension. A quasi-experimental design study was
conducted at the English Department of Larbi Ben M’Hidi University in order to examine the
effects of intensive connected speech instruction on promoting students’ listening
comprehension. One English instructor taught the experimental group and the control group
in which forty students were involved. A test was administered as a pre- and post-tests to
probe the learners’ performance on listening comprehension before and after the treatment
applied to the control and experimental groups. The pre-test was administered and revealed no
statistical significant differences between the two groups’ performance. After that, the
treatment started and finished within three weeks. Learners of the experimental group were
introduced to the aspects of connected speech, namely assimilation, elision, linking sounds,
contractions and weak forms. Learners of the control group continued their regular class
instruction following the course-book. The findings show that the experimental group’s level
of listening comprehension significantly improved, but the control group’s level of listening
comprehension slightly improved; however statistically, this improvement is not significant in
comparison to the impressive improvement recorded in the experimental group. The
significant positive effect of intensive connected speech training has been proven by many
statistical devices that showed some consistent results such as the mean, variance, standard
deviation and all the procedures for carrying out the paired sample t-test which are the
suitable statistical procedures since we compare the performance of two groups. In light of the
obtained results, we conclude that intensive connected speech training has a significant
positive effect on enhancing L2 listening comprehension, because it makes students quite
aware of the aspects of connected speech such as assimilation, elision; weak forms, linking
and intrusion in order to comprehend natural spoken discourses. |
