We hypothesise that EFL learners would code switch between English and Algerian Arabic when connecting on Facebook in order to fill some lexical gaps. To check the validity of this hypothesis, Facebook screenshots are taken and two questionnaires are administered to a random sample of English BA students at Mentouri University, Constantine 1. The obtained results have revealed that because of the students` lack of English lexis coupled with their desire to joke and communicate easily, they code switch, in different ways, from English into Algerian Arabic or vice versa. Therefore, this work suggests a new way to ameliorate students` English level through using the phenomenon of Facebook interactions as a means of teaching and learning English vocabulary Diplome : Master 2 Permalink : https://bu.umc.edu.dz/master/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4737 Code switching among efl learners on facebook : The case of third year english students at mentouri university, constantine 1 [texte imprimé] / Ryma Boudjouada, Auteur ; Youcef Beghoul, Directeur de thèse . - CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine, 2017 . - 76 f. ; 30 cm.

Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Applied Language Studies Code Switching Radio Programmes Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The current research examines the phenomenon of code switching in Algeria and investigates the alternations that take place in two radio programmes and in some Facebook messages. It aims to contribute to shedding more light on the different reasons behind code switching. Furthermore, it seeks to identify its types that exist in the speech and writing of some Algerians as well as to highlight the frequency of occurrence of code switching in both discourses. The study has shown that some Algerians tend to shift from Algerian Arabic (AA) into French (FR) while exchanging ideas in radio programmes as well as chatting via Facebook. We hypothesized that they switch in order to communicate easily and successfully. In order to check the validity of the hypothesis, recorded and written data were used, and the results of the analysis of the corpuses have confirmed this hypothesis. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Language Studies Teachers students code switching Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : Nowadays, Code switching is a wide spread phenomenon in our society generally and universities especially. This research shows the characteristics and the use of code switching in university classrooms by both teachers and students. This work lies within the scope of sociolinguistics. It brings a small reflection on other related phenomenon to code switching. To test the hypotheses of this study, a questionnaire is used as a research instrument. The theoretical part deals with code switching situation in classrooms and it aims to define concepts related to code switching and its distinction from other related language phenomena. The study has shown that there is a relation between code switching and competence and performance in foreign language learning and that it can be used as a planned strategy in language learning. The results of the study also support the hypothesis that code switching can be used as a strategy of language learning. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Code Switching capacities of language learning. Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : Nowadays, code switching is considered as a linguistic communicative phenomenon
in which the speaker uses more than one language in a single conversation. It is largely
spread in the societies in general and at universities in particular. Therefore, this research aims
at investigating the attitudes of both first year teachers and students of English towards the use
of code switching as a beneficial language teaching/learning strategy. It also attempts to
highlight different reasons that lead students to code switch inside the classrooms. The current
study takes a place at Mentouri University Constantine 1. Accordingly we hypothesize that
first year teachers and students retain positive attitudes towards the use of code switching and
that it is a useful teaching/learning technique. In order to test the validity of our hypothesis
and collect data two questionnaires are used, a teacher and a student questionnaires, in
addition to classroom observation during oral lectures of teacher/student interaction on the
one hand, and student/student interaction on the other hand. . The sample consists of six
teachers and sixty students. On the basis of the research findings, it appears that the majority
of first year students hold positive attitudes towards the use of code switching, as it serves
their learning needs and removes ambiguity in certain situations. The outcomes also reveal
that despite the fact that teachers of oral expression sometimes use code switching to ensure
better understanding for their learners they nevertheless adopt negative attitudes towards it
claiming that it makes students dependent to their L1 and limits their capacities of language

Titre : The application of code switching in teaching english as a foreign language at middle school level (classroom discourse) : Case study of second year, middle school tahar zeghdoudi, guelma Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Imen Maizi, Auteur ; Samir Laraba, Directeur de thèse Editeur : CONSTANTINE [ALGERIE] : Université Frères Mentouri Constantine Année de publication : 2013 Importance : 86 f. Format : 30 cm. Note générale : Une copie électronique PDF disponible en BUC. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Lettres et Langues Etrangères:Langue Anglaise Tags : Language Sciences Code Switching Teaching Foreign Language Middle School Index. décimale : 420 Langue anglaise Résumé : The current work aims at examining the application and the functionality of code switching among middle school teachers and students in the classroom discourse while teaching and learning English as a foreign language. The educational setting in which this study takes place is Tahar Zeghdoudi Middle School in Guelma. The qualitative data was achieved through a questionnaire and an interview survey. The sample of the study consisted of 40 middle school students, and 8 middle school teachers who were selected randomly. The findings of the study showed that, code switching is a common phenomenon in teaching and learning English as a foreign language. Switching from English into Arabic is mostly required in classrooms. Besides the necessity to facilitate the teaching and the learning process; it also saves time and efforts. Furthermore, the teachers should be accurate through switching, because any mistake may lead to misunderstanding or misinterpretation especially in English classrooms’ discourse. Also, code switching during EFL lessons sometimes occurs when student’s converse with their teachers about non-lesson related things. As an addition, students claimed that their teachers used code-switching when wanting order in the classroom and when explaining instructions again to those who did not understand when the instructions were given in the target language. Code switching in EFL classroom can help both teachers and students to utilize the maximum in both teaching and learning. So, the hypothesis is confirmed, i.e. with the application of code switching as a teaching technique, and as a learning strategy, the process of teaching will be facilitated and it will serve as a comprehension tool for learners. To deduce, this study recommends that similar studies should be conducted in other schools to obtain a clear and a complete picture of code switching (CS) its application and functions in school rooms.
