Résumé : |
The aim of this dissertation is to disclose the reasons behind the phenomenon of adultery in nineteenth-century Russia as exemplified through Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece, Anna Karenina. The Russian women lived without freedom and all their rights and duties were dictated by men. The society lived by very ancient traditions and a rigid religion that prohibited women to take any decision without man’s consent. Many factors emerged especially during the1840s and 1880s that helped women to emancipate themselves in various ways. Hence, adultery became part of a new concept of life adopted by many aristocratic ladies in the Russian society. Therefore, we have deemed it necessary to undertake a thorough examination of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina in order to show the motivations that led those Russian women to deviate from the usual moral code dictated by society. The novel is mainly about adultery in nineteenth-century Russia and highlights the true life of women in the Russian aristocracy through the portrayal of the protagonist, Anna Karenina |

Résumé : |
Kate Chopin’s feminist voice appears in The Awakening, Wiser than A God, The Story
of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings. This paper tries to depict how the female heroes in
each work searched for individuality and freedom by standing in the face of inappropriate
social conventions. Each plot shows that the clash between the turning loose of the heroine
and the social conformity is essential for the establishment of the female autonomous identity.
Chopin also depicts how women should take over their lives to fulfill their desires, which are
in her case usually tabooing subjects of women’s sexual urge and sensual experiences.
Intense need for change leads the women to walk a new life path for all the times they have
been treated as culprits for the sense of freedom and pleasure. |

Résumé : |
This study reviews the role of the American Dream in building a new nation from its foundation and demonstrates how the concept of the Dream evolved through time by being subject to many historical events: the foundation, immigration, the Great Depression, and globalization. In analyzing the American Dream as a key concept, the study calls to identify the reasons behind people’s immigration to America and to discuss the philosophical notion of the American Dream:a recurring theme in American society. Additionally, the study seeks to explain the real meaning of the American Dream through its different concepts in order to reveal the common values that shaped the United States of America, and if it is possible to redefine the term according to both the American nation and the world, taking into consideration the descriptive, historical and philosophical approaches to deal with the topic |

Résumé : |
Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (2012) and Sharp Objects (2006) mirror the changes that
occurred in human nature and human suffering in a contemporary setting, or rather an age of
anxiety. Intertwined with unauthentic, liquefied selves and cyclical narratives, individuals no
longer identify as one single entity, but as multifaceted, morally ambiguous characters. Therefore,
humanity is stripped from its humanness, labeling one another as subjects of desire and objects to
use maladaptively, which outlines the main question concerning this study. These contemporary
beliefs and hierarchies are depicted in both literary works and are assessed in this research in social
and psychoanalytical terms through the facet of villainy. The Jungian psychoanalytical perspective
contextualizes the novels as archetypal representations, whereas Zygmunt Bauman’s Liquid
Modernity depicts a sociological perspective. |
